Very touched by your loss. My family & I would like to help out at the basketball tournament. Offering some cupcakes, brownies and Chinese Chicken salad for sale at the game. We will donate the food & labor and the profits will go to Kenny. I have 2 college students and a senior in high school. They all were basketball players. I know at this time in his life Kenny needs all the support he can get. Please let me know if this will be appropriate.

Monday, June 8th, 2009I first met Maria and Kenny when Kenny was a kindergartner, and I taught Kenny off and on until he was in 8th grade. I have such incredible respect for Maria’s mission to be the best mom she could be. She was an inspiration to me and I know many others, a warrior when it came to raising Kenny to be the best HE can be. Kenny, you are a gifted athlete with a sharp mind. I think you also inherited your mother’s warm and generous heart. Sometimes that’s hard for a young man in our society to show openly, but I trust that you will honor your wonderful mother in school, on the court, and in your relationships. Yesterday at Maria’s funeral I saw the many folks who are there to help and cheer you on, so I know you won’t be alone. But if I can help out some way, please let me know.

From Your Junior High Pals
Monday, June 1st, 2009Maria was my best friend in junior high. We were always back and forth at each other’s homes which were just a few blocks away from each other. She accompanied my family on several outings and camping trips, and we had the best times! What a great friend Maria was to my sister and I. We lost touch after high school, but last year she “found” my sister in Moreno Valley where we went to school, and the two of them and Kenny came over my house, and we had a WONDERFUL visit! And we were very impressed with Kenny and his excellent manners and positive outlook. This tragedy is so hard to understand because it makes absolutely no sense. I’m just thankful that after so many years apart we were able to get in one good last visit. Kenny, your Mom was so very proud of you. And she was indeed loved by all who met her. You must stay strong and persevere, and you will because you are your Mother’s son. God Bless, Annette Avila Heying & Jeannette Avila Mendoza

Maria You Are In Our Hearts Now and Forever
Sunday, May 31st, 2009Dear Maria,
All of us who have been blessed to know you, and share in the beauty of the soul that you Are, are deeply saddened by your absence. A diamond that shines like the sun does not begin to describe the love that you radiated to all of us every time we were graced in your presence. Through your Son, Kenny, you live and shine on for all to see, and His strength, grace and integrity of character are all a tribute to the constant flow of love and affection that you gave in your life. Thank you for being in our lives, and showing us all what it means to be a Real, Down to Earth, Angel. We love you and we thank God for you, and we celebrate your life. All of us who knew you still feel you in the air we breathe, whispering in our ears “Call Kenny… Where is He?.. What did eat today?..” and we will honor your memory by helping assist Kenny to complete the goals and dreams that you two set out to accomplish together, from basketball to college and beyond. We are committed to Being Here for Kenny as you assist from the other side, and we remember you now and always. I love you Maria, you are in my heart forever, and I will do all that I can to be a true friend, sister, and family member to Kenny, my little brother, from this day on.
IN ETERNAL APPRECIATION FOR YOU,
Kelli Maria

Saturday, May 30th, 2009Maria,
You were and you are a blessing to me and everyone that came into contact with you. I enjoyed having you as a neighbor, friend and someone to confide in. Christmas Eve of 2008 we spent together talking until 3 am. That Christmas morning is a memory I will never forget. The Joy and energy you possessed showed everyone in their darkest moments the light of hope. My family and I are and everyone who knew you are all deeply saddened by this sinless accident. I continue to ask myself why you, a graceful and courageous women of all people would be taken from us. I will forever miss your outgoing upbeat courageous spirit. Although we loved you…. GOD loved you best. Despite the obstacles you had in your life, you never gave up hope. You always had positive energy to spread to everyone you came into contact with.
Your memory will always be treasured and will be missed by all. I missed your phone call that day at 2:20 and I know you were calling to share good news like always. Maria I love you and I know you’re looking down on Kenny, your family and friends with a smile on your face telling us to continue to live everyday to our fullest because tomorrow is not promised to anyone. You never got the chance to attend church with me due to your busy schedule with Kenny and his games and I understood. Kenny, you were, you are and will always be your mother’s pride and joy; she lived for you. Continue to live your dreams and play every game as if your mother was in those stands rooting for her baby and his team. Kenny, you know have a guarding angel watching over you.
May your soul rest in Peace Maria
Love You Always, Yashica Simpson

Friday, May 29th, 2009When I first met Maria, I was struck by how vibrant and warmhearted she was. It was as if every day was a birthday and every moment was a gift to be opened. Maria listened with immense understanding, spoke with great enthusiasm and had a unique gift of embracing everything with the joy and innocence of a child. One couldn’t help but be drawn to her. She inspired me as an artist, as a mother and as a human being. Underneath her humble demeanor, was a visionary, a life coach and a spiritual leader who led by example and never asked for anything in return. Savanah and I will miss her dearly.
To Maria & Kenny
Friday, May 29th, 2009To Maria,
You were a goddess, a wonderful mother, a great friend, you were simply a ray of sunlight whose love for life and your son shone upon anyone who met you. I am blessed to have had you for a friend and sister in this struggle & blessing called life. To have laughed with you razzing refs and telling you to leave Kenny alone while he mugging in a game. Thank you for your generosity and beautiful smile. I am honored to call you an Angel.
Kenny - I wish I could hold you and make this all go away. But I take solice in knowing your mom left a legacy of people like myself who honor and love you both. I am here for you period. In any way, be it a place to stay, a meal, a ride that someone else can\’t give. Expect to see me in the stands next year during your varsity games along with the girls, we will be there to cheer you on. Do not ever hesitate to call me.

We will miss you
Friday, May 29th, 2009My family was very sad to hear this tragic news. We know Maria and Kenny from West Marin Soccer, where Kenny played with our son Calvin on the West Marin Riot team. Maria was a devoted mother to Kenny and he is a living testament to her care and loving nature. Maria was fun to be around and always had a smile or laugh to share. We will miss Maria and the joy and love she brought to this earth. Kenny, you will be in our thoughts and prayers. Stephen, Wendy and Calvin
