My son and I just learned about the death of Maria on June 3rd. We have not fully grasped the sad news. I am numb with sorrow.
Maria was so sweet to us when Kenny and Jonathan played together on a youth soccer team back in elementary school. Sometimes I felt uncomfortable around the other soccer parents but not around Maria. She was always warm, frank and funny. She had a way of making people feel right at home.
We only crossed paths a couple of times after that soccer season, but seeing Maria was always like running into a childhood friend. I don’t know why - we hardly knew each other. That’s just the kind of person she was. Maria was so friendly, kind and generous to people she met, that she made us feel like we’d known her forever.
When I imagine different people who have passed on, memories of some of them bring a sense of sadness, some bring respect, some bring tenderness. Memories of Maria bring a sense of joy and a warm smile follows. Maria Socorro Mikell =Smile Maker.
